PEACE, LAND, & BREAD READING GROUPS
"There’s no such thing as neutral education. Education either functions as an instrument to bring about conformity or freedom."
Pedagogy of the Oppressed
ABOUT OUR READING GROUPS
Peace, Land, and Bread reading groups are a new endeavor from our journal, working to bring communist scholars, workers, and students together in such a way as to unite the worlds inside and outside of higher education—bringing lively, open, and important discussions and discursive practices to the spaces where they are most needed. As with all of our projects, you won't have to pay dues or group fees; our reading groups work only to provide valuable intellectual spaces where the honest exploration of revolutionary theory and practice can flourish.
Groups unite scholars, workers, educators, graduate and undergraduate students, party organizers, student activists, and those new to theory. Every group should be as open to people thinking about communist politics for the first time as they are to well-read and seasoned theoreticians. The main goal of Peace, Land, and Bread reading groups should be to communize and democratize the practices of honest intellectual and scholarly discussion. Like Prometheus, we as communists must take the intellectual and academic practices from the gods themselves and give them back to the people—freely.
HOW OFTEN DO GROUPS MEET?
Most reading groups meet monthly to discuss articles from Peace, Land, and Bread, and elsewhere.
SHOULD I START OR JOIN A READING GROUP?
You should absolutely join or create a group if:
You are a worker who reads and shares articles from Peace, Land, and Bread and other communist outlets online, but have reached a point in your personal study where you'd like to connect with other readers in real life to talk through the arguments and ideas you're encountering. Reading groups are a great way to connect with others interested in theory, outside of party and educational organizations.
You are in a political party and want to use the scholarly articles in Peace, Land, and Bread to drive a study group in which members can engage with contemporary, progressive, and peer-reviewed revolutionary materials of a germane and relevant nature. Peace, Land, and Bread is an interpartisan, international scholarly journal; we promise to take your party study groups to the next level by offering you new quarterly materials to engage with and consider.
You are a researcher or an educator—working in higher education—or a student of higher education looking to connect with others in higher ed. interested in scholarly communist and Marxist-Leninist theory outside of the confines of your institution or classroom. Or maybe you are looking to bring Peace, Land, and Bread into the classroom. Our editors are scholars and educators themselves, and all of our published materials are designed to be read equally in high-level graduate seminars and in cafes and on street corners.
You want to be connected to an international body of scholars and workers, both inside and outside of the academy, working to advance revolutionary theory and practice, interested in building reading groups all over the world.
